Is The New Crew a Christian comic book? Yes. No. Maybe. It depends... What is a "Christian comic book" anyway?
I am certainly a Christian. So are my editorial and artistic co-workers in this project. And, of course, our work reflects our view of the world, the same as any other artist.
But does that make our book itself a "Christian" book? Again, I don't know.
The New Crew is a lighthearted superhero story, a satire of our celebrity-crazed pop culture. There is only one Christian character in the story, and the role of her faith is to provide characterization and motivation within the story, not education or evangelism to the reader.
The story isn't an evangelistic tract. It's not a didactic cartoon sermon. And you won't find C.S. Lewis-style symbolic allegories even if you squint really hard. It's just a story about shallow people behaving in a comically shallow fashion. And how one lone Christian woman tries her best to live out her convictions even when it feels like everyone else is against her.
If you were expecting something more explicitly "Christian" from this group of Christian creators at a Christian publishing company, I'm sorry to disappoint you.
If you were waiting to hear that the human heart is broken and lost in sin, that we stand guilty before God because of it, that Jesus Christ died and rose again as a sacrifice for sinners so that any who trust in Him for the forgiveness of their sins will be reconciled to God -- then I'm afraid that you'll have to read it here from me directly, not inserted forcibly into a story of bumbling superheroes.
There. That wasn't so bad, was it? ;-)
